What is a birth defect? It is any condition present at birth that may interefere with a child's growth and development. Birth defects may affect how the body is formed. They can also affect how parts of the body work, including the brain. Some birth defects cause problems with both learning and physical development.
The causes of many birth defects are not known. Some birth defects are caused by the changes in genetic make-up and/or factors in the environment. Once a child is found to have a birth defect, special services are available to help families understand the cause of their child's health difficulty.

| The birth of a baby is both a joyous and overwhelming experience. It is often said that 'having a child changes everything', but having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition brings even greater challenges. We realize that every child and family has different needs, and the Michigan Genetics and Birth Defects program would like to inform the public about the wide range of resources and services available to help Michigan families.
